For early detection
Mammogram is a proven imaging application for breast cancer screening in asymptomatic population, as well as for diagnostic purpose in women presenting with breast lumps.

Mammogram is able to detect *DCIS (ductal carcinoma in-situ), a localised form of very early breast cancer before it turns invasive. Some authority even regard DCIS as a pre-cancerous state and it can predate the onset of invasive cancer by up till decades.

For those with breast lumps, mammogram can characterise the lesion to indicate its nature.

Oftentimes other imaging tools are used concurrently when a breast mass is detected on mammogram, e.g. Ultrasound, MRI breast and image guided tissue biopsy.
