PET-CT

Function and anatomy combined!

Most medical imaging equipment is competent in providing anatomical information, for example in determining if a spleen or a lymph node is enlarged, or is there a mass in the liver.

Limited functional information can be derived by how the organ system reacts to external contrast agent being administered, for example a kidney that does not enhance or excrete the contrast well has impaired function.

But the hallmark of PET-CT is combination of both! An example is a metabolic cancer cell which is too small for conventional imaging modality to detect, may be positive on PET. Conversely, a node which is enlarged on conventional imaging (e.g. CT scan), maybe metabolically inactive, hence poses no threat to the health of the individual.

PET-CT service is being offered by the Nuclear Imaging Department, a sister department of ours.
